Ecotechnics Controller ROM upgrade

Post by Nanook »

I got myself an old Ecotechnics controller off ebay a while back and it was running old firmware. Smokey was kind enough to send me a newer version so I could upgrade it :) - Heres a quick how to for anyone else :)
.... I may remove the new chip when I get time and program some incase anyone else needs one - or at least upload the bin file.

SO! Here it is.....

Step one - Check firmware version

Step 2 - open rear or casing.

Step 3 - CHECK chip orientation - see the wee notch at one end? This has to be like this with the new chip :)

Step 4 - remove the chip - be gentle due to other components and bending legs on the old chip. You might not need the old one again.... but if the new one doesnt work for whatever reason you will!

Step 5 - plug the new one in with GENTLE pressure. Start in the middle and work your way to the edges.

Step 6 - replace cover, turn on and see if it worked :)

All in this took me 3 minutes max - again, thanks to Smokey :)

Edit - heres a video I made ..... honest ;) - Wish I'd seen it first but hey ho hahaha

The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.

Very nice written and easy to understand. May I just ask what are the benefits of the new chip?

Lovely write up Nanook really is a decent thread the newer firmware with these units is very important especially when running heaters etc,

Now you need to to ensure the units running the 0p1 setting as opposed to the 0p0 factory default !

These are serious bits of kit

What's the difference with the new chip smokey? I mean I don't think I ever had any problems with my heater on the old chip. Is it expensive to buy the new one?

I have ordered a programmer. If anyone wants this version I shall be able to copy the chip I have and send them out - a blank chip is £6 or so.

There are many differences Bulls some are relevant others aren’t tbh your ok from 2.3 upwards anything before then is as Nanook says outdated and runs similar to mobile updates etc some features are added others removed

I have a contact at Ecotechnics who has helped me out throughout the years, I have emailed him just now to see if I can get some kind of detailed list for the forum etc I’m sure he will be able to compile something for us so I’ll await a response and update

Also check your firmware and if you need an updated chip it’s no problem I can send you one too fella
