How much light for veg?

Post by GMO »

Hi everyone

Another question that seems dumb at first, but scratch the surface and it's really not a straight forward answer

So let's break this down into 3 stages of veg to try make the question a little simpler and to get everyone's input evenly on the right topic

1- how much light for a seedling/clone

2- how much light for full vegative growth

3- how much light for a mother plant

I can imagine a great deal will come down to the growth rates your hoping to see out of the plant. With that in mind could we give some context to the input as well and which stage we are talking about?

E.g.

Currently I have mum's, seedling, clones and plants in the early stages of veg all under the same light, the area the plants cover is massive compare to the coverage of the light but I think this works to my advantage as the mother's are at the edges slowing their growth, along with clone which don't want intense light. And the young plants which I want to encourage have the centre and greatest amount of light. All for 140w from 1 led panel

Hello GMO
It's hard to tell exactly how much but I can share my experience and the way I do it.

1- how much light for a seedling/clone

Okay. I've got 3 different lights for that purpose - first one is 125w CFL with Euro reflector and second one is Prakasa 200(which can be used @ 100w too)

a)125 CFL - I personally love this light - It gives the young seedlings and cuttings everything they need - not very intense light and it keeps them warm. The only issue you can have with that one is that if you don't keep a close eye on distance between light and seedlings/cuttings they can grow wanky

b)Prakasa 200 - I think it's a great light for this early stage. Dimmed down to 100 it's perfect for warm places as it produces nearly no heat at all. As you said young plants don't need intense light and with this one you can just set it far away and let them do their thingy. You shouldn't worry about stretch too as light gives the plants tight internode spacing.

c)Invisible Sun LED - Only tried that one properly for 1 grow now and I am perfectly happy. Young seedlings developed perfectly healthy. Just need to make sure to turn the light right down from the driver otherwise it's faaar to intense for young plants. I am only just testing this light properly so expect more about it in a few months :)

2- how much light for full vegative growth

I always slowly increase the light for the plants. At the earl stage when they are developing their roots they don't need much, so makes no point spending coins on leccy. Start froom 100w and slowly making my way up. I know for a fact that I can fill up 1.2x1.2 tent with dual-spectrum 400w hps. I believe you can do that with less too, I just don't like the idea as plants seem to grow weaker and wanky.

3- how much light for a mother plant

Depending on your needs really buddy. If you want a mother plant which will produce lots of new tops constantly of course you will need proper light for it.
But if youre keeping a small mother plant which you only need to produce few cuttings every few months, she can easily relax in the corner of your veg tent :)
