I just finished harvesting my latest grow that consisted of 5 strains. I want to do a smoke report on each and started thinking about how to do that effectively. It was serendipitous that The Dude Grows Show had an episode with DJ Short.

He has a pretty cool method of evaluating bud. His said that you shouldn't fall in love with plants in the garden. He doesn't care if it's beautiful, smells good, etc. The bottom line, according to him, is "How is the effect?".
He uses five criteria to evaluate his bud. He starts at a baseline (ie: not high)
1. Onset - how much time does it take for you to feel it?
2. Duration - how long does the effect last?
3. Ceiling - after taking more tokes do you get higher or melt into the couch?
4. Burn out - is this the jar you reach for? Or is it the last one left?
5. Shelf life - after three months, six month or a year in the jar, is it still good?
I know this takes out all the normal things people judge pot by. Bag appeal, color, bud shape, trim, smell, taste. But I guess if we weren't after the "effect" we would all be smoking <.3% THC hemp.
What would you want to see in a smoke review that would make it relevant to you?

Re: How do you evaluate your bud?
I mean the effect is the final say for me. I tend to grade mine also on medical use.. meaning does it help with muscle spasms…pain..insomnia…as well as the mental effects of being sick for years. While I do enjoy the high I also need it to help one or more of the above. Buuuuuttt… growing is as much therapy for me as the effects of the bud. So I also grade mine on the beauty of the plant and how well it bounces back from training.

Re: How do you evaluate your bud?
If it turns me into this...
I like it!
Thing is... I like most of the dope I've grown.
They all have a job to do and are all individual entities, So if some have been a bit weak, so they're for a daytime... Etc./ yadda yadda dabba doo.
There;s stuff that hasn't agreed with me too, that goes on the fire.
Apart from that, I tend to forget about what has been before and I always seem to be looking to the next plant, so no need for star ratings for me.
Maybe I should start getting competitive with myself?

Re: How do you evaluate your bud?
Being competitive with yourself is normally always a good thing to want to do better than the grow before.. I’ve seemed to take a step back with my last grow

I'd have gotten into less trouble as a youth if could have just learnt to stay away from myself.
