Dark cycle before chopping

Post by Greenfingers »

since chatting with a friend who is a long-time grower about a long dark cycle before chopping, any of you do it with good results or is this more Bro science? :sllinfavour:
These are what ive been reading over and over again.

"Darkness increases resin production
Darkness increases terpene production
Terpene levels are at their highest at the end of the dark cycle right before lights on
Sugars/starches recede from the plant to the root zone while in dark cycle resulting in a better tasting/burning bud
Chlorophyll isn’t produced/active in the dark and existing chlorophyll begins to break down

Other practices:
keep them watered before chop to extend drying time (this makes sense)
let them get bone dry to to increase resin/terpene production"

what you think ?

this subject always comes round doesnt it lol. I feed(plain water) right up to the day i chop, purely because if it dries out a little the branches go a little "soft" and it makes it harder to chop imho.

I dont get the dark thing personally, tried it twice now, didnt seem to make a difference but then again i didnt have a clone in the same state to run the opposite strategy to make a direct comparison. That said, i won't be doing it again lol

Cheers mate, ive asked again as more people do more experiments but don't always document their findings, Im just hoping for a good strong answer  and hopefully with some strong science.
if i had 2 flower rooms i'd give it a go side by side.

Cheers

@2-Scoops do you remember when Swilly over on the circle, left his lights off for 5 days being a pissed up fool?

I swear that was the chunkiest auto I've ever seen. Can't seem to find the pics.

But, from that I think we worked out that a dark period does them no harm, might possibly get them to use up their reserves, seeing as they can;t photysyntheiser and make their grub during the dark period.

Like us humans when we fast, we use up our fat stores when the carbs run out.

I normally do the 48 hour dark period before chop but tbh I don't know if it helps or not :idn: probably not a good idea if you are fighting low temps/high humidity tho :naughty:

This is actually pretty interesting so in theory it would use the energy it normally would photosynthesis to use for terp and resin production? Is that the thought?

It’s all bro science for me, I don’t think I have read any serious trails on weather it helps or not,
For me I just go plain water no feed till all the colour had faded from the leaves then chop them

I have to go with Bro-science. But that being said, I would love to see some actual hard science on the subject. Heck we might find out that plants do better with 72 hours straight light before chop.

I've done it with clones grown in same media and nutes, 2 tents, 1 with the dark period, one without, no difference in my little bro science project.

I do think there are other ways to preserve terps though that I've played with.
