New member, prepping for first grow
Heyo! I'm Merrick, 40s in a newly legal state with home cultivation. Just started reading about cultivation and haven't been able to stop. My intention is to grow 3 plants in a 3*3*6 tent indoors in (hopefully organic) living soil. I'll probably help my parents set up a grow at their spot soon after. I have a HLG bspec light and a marshydro flowering light rn, supposedly an es300 arriving this week. im meeting a guy tomorrow to pick up a tent and a carbon filter/inline fan. he has a bunch of other stuff as well he said he would let go for $50. i have access to my own and my parents compost. ours is mostly veggie waste from cooking and gardening. parents' has more fishy stuff as dad is a fisherman, as well as just being more intentionally composed, as mom is a longtime flower (lilies, irises, etc) gardener. based on what little i've read i feel it is likely i may become obsessed with building a great living soil.
Rn i am looking for a couple of things.. i have found free pdfs of a bunch of great, very comprehensive growing books, but i am looking for a short, super straightforward book/site/pdf to use for my first grow as a primary reference. the other books are just really overwhelming right now, bc i dont have any hands-on eperience. so far the closest i've found is growweedeasy but it's a little sprawling and "comprehensive".
the other thing i'm looking for is advice on strains and buying seeds! the person i bought two of my lights from is an eperienced grower and offered to help out with some clones. i'm inclined to take them up on this; very much enjoyed meeting them and they could obviously be super helpful. i'm also interested in picking strains and growing some stuff i've loved a long time but only had very limited times and quantities, etc. Also as I read and research more there is a whole huge genetics world out there so i am really open to suggestions :D Just found out about truefire genetics and bombsquad seeds from old GR420 podcasts.
Would really love some help on those things. I'm really ecsited to check out this community more. I haven't really looked thru the forums much yet bc i just saw there was the need to post a few times to unlock yr acct so i did an intro post thing :D One more thing about me is that a few of my laptop's keys don't work so sometimes i will just omit it or use a similar phonetic letter substitute. i won't do that when i post on my phone or desktop, and apologies if it is offputting. thanks for having such an inviting community!

Re: New member, prepping for first grow
Welcome to GR420,
Sounds like you are doing some research which is good to see. Many people get over-excited and jump in too quickly. As for breeders/see, stick with a proven breeder and a more stable strain. Want you don't want is to end up with 3 seeds that are very unstable, and need different feeds, and different sizes. A breeder like Seedstockers is my go-to, they have some very stable genetics. I've run both the Wh8ite Widow and Northern Lights. Both solid and stable strains.

Re: New member, prepping for first grow
Welcome aboard bro!
For the basic growing knowledge, it's not that much: you can look for some videos on Youtube, in less than an hour you'll achieve the basic knowledge you want.
For the strains to grow, you're right: there are a chaotic number of different strains! Old school, USA post OG Kush, and all their crosses lol
I agree with Keeno, the key is to find a reliable seedbank (Seedstockers are one of my favourite too, good seeds low prices). Then, I suggest, you can try autoflower version of the strains you want to test ;)
If you have some question, the forum is here! You can find lots of useful info in here

Re: New member, prepping for first grow
Just an addendum, in case anyone else asks, I found a relatively short (80pp) grow guide specifically about organic living soil methods. Search Reddit for user backyardboogie420 and in their post history for a post with a link to a drop box with the PDF of the guide. Really good reading so far.

Re: New member, prepping for first grow
Oh my new grower your excitement is contagious!! Sounds like you’ve got a great start with loads of people to help. I honestly would suggest starting a diary when you get the clones going. Having a running diary here has been one of the best tools as when you post at anytime you can advise or help. Then you can go back on any grow you’ve done to see where you can improve. The threads in here have tons and tons of amazing information as well. So glad you joined looking forward to seeing your grows!
