I’d heard of salt build ups and know to avoid it by keeping tanks fresh in nft and maintain runoff in coco, never really put much more thought into it than that, just assumed it was a sort of catch all name for just the waste products that cause harm to your plants, makes more sense now you’ve explained it for me.
Thanks for that

No problem @Vador. Maintaining a decent run-off is essential when growing in media like coco or soil when using salts.

NFT is a different ballgame altogether. Plants do infact give off waste and that can build up in the tank but you don't really get a build up of salts. The issue with running your tanks for too long is that plants don't take everything up at the same time so eventually things go out of balance. Without testing for each individual element, it's a guessing game to what you have or don't have. I do run my NFT systems a bit longer than most though. When running NFT I do a tank change every 2/3 weeks depending on how much they've drank. A nice rule of thumb is top up until you've topped up with the same amount the system can hold. For example, I have a 100ltr tank and I top up 20ltr ever 3 days then I should replace the water every 15 days. I find that to be an excellent rule of thumb. Keeps microfine to a minimum too. Something you don't want too much off when growing NFT.

There's fuck all wrong with them plants @DIY.Rik they'll sail home just fine.

If you're worried give them a splash of a seaweed drink or a liquid organics fert.

You really know your stuff @seymore_budz.
Just occurred to me reading this that salt build ups must actually come from the chelated salts in the feed, I always thought it was a by product from the plant that just needs to be flushed out, like human excrement in a way that just needs washing away hence the need to maintain runoff in coco.
Makes sense that it comes from the feed and that’s why you get nute burn not from the feed but from the salt build up
Salts are a bloody nuisance lol. Especially if you're organic gardening. But...! The sea is full of salt yet also full of biology and microscopic life. Just a different kind.

In far Eastern lands I've heard of farmers flooding land with sea water. Like rice fields or something along those lines.

I suppose everything has a balance in life, too much of one single thing can never be a good thing......

Well, I think I will see it through for a few more weeks but they've defo matured early.
I have some organic bottled stuff, it's not too salty, not after a shot of it myself, it tasted a little like marmite actually. Mmmmm.

:hungry: I may have a mug of warm Miracle Gro before bed tonight. :hungry:

You'll be chasing your tail trying to rectify anything now and probably just make them worse. Sling them a drink of water with a splash of tonic in and see how they go.

I'd plump for a squirt of seaweed rather then a feed, looking at them. They've done all their hard work and now just need tickling to the finishline.

Ride it out and enjoy that ride man! :running-around:
