I discovered these AMAZING writers during COVID-19. (Warning these are all Sci-Fi)
Semiosis by Sue Burke
Another world inhabited by people from Earth. Mix in new voyagers from Earth and division between them, alien species and sentient plants. Really a fun story as is the follow up book.
The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin
This was actually the second thing I read by this author. Her book of short stories, “How Long Until Black Future Month” got me started. The trilogy is worth seeking out.
Ball Lighting by Cixin Lui
This story by a Chinese author is almost “Steam Punk” in the trappings. But the story will draw you in and of course some unforeseen consequences.
Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
I saved my favorite for last. This is a futuristic, corporate space, action adventure series! I love it. Think about a humanoid, highly weaponized, very computer savvy security guard. And he has broken free of the restraints that kept him in check. And while he reeks mayhem (with considerable restraint) he has the wisecracking inner dialogue of Ryan Reynolds.

Funny thing is that wasn't intentional. I received a list of Best Sci-Fi books of 2018 (?) and it just happened that these were my favorites.
