Soap nuts as wetting agent for living soil?
Hey all,
Would using soap nuts in RO water in a weak solution be likely to kill worms and beneficial microbes? And how about aloe? Which would be best as a wetting agent, if any?

Re: Soap nuts as wetting agent for living soil?
Why would you want to use soap nuts?
If you want to use a wetting agent, then go with aloe.

I use Raw yucca for my wetting agent for another option

Thanks. I have loads of soap nuts not being used and don't like to waste things. The Aspie Toker wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 3:20 amWhy would you want to use soap nuts?

This video suggests using saponin extract as a wetting agent when building soil, hence thinking soap nuts would work:

Re: Soap nuts as wetting agent for living soil?
Personally, I would use soap nuts for washing clothes rather than as a wetting agent. Soap nuts are known to be antimicrobial, so could harm the soil. I'd rather use Aloe for plants.sybarite wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:25 amThanks. You can use aloe, or yucca. I've never tried soap nuts so unsure about those. I'm trialling an organic adjuvant that supposedly increases absorption of foliars currently. I'll keep you posted on that.

Email from Build-A-Soil:
"You are indeed correct. The soap nut water solution would be inherently equally effective in the wetting agent aspect of things. We have not experienced any death of microbial life when using a high saponin product/material such as soap nuts, yucca extract, or even the saponaria extract"

Re: Soap nuts as wetting agent for living soil?
just for my piece of mind i like to add aloe to the roots and use soapnuts for foliar as the saponins dehydrate the shell on soft bodied insects
I dont think there is a "right answer" just lots of reasons
