Potting up

Soo, usually I never pot up, jiffy cube into final pot voila
But this time I thought I would try one in a final pot and one potted up.

The one in its final pot was keeping up with the other but was skinnier, now I’m starting to see it lag behind the one in a smaller pot. Basically seeing the benefits already.

Now I’m going to pot up into its final pot and I was wondering what rule of thumb people go by?
I can see roots at the bottom of each hole and noticed some at the top going sideways (had to add more coco), was thinking this is a good time. But I am only on my 4th node just, which seems pretty small.

Can’t remember pot sizes haha

Any insight on your own methods would be grand.

So it doesn't make too much difference but I always like to see them close to being pot bound before potting on. Reduces the lag of re-potting a bit. It really doesn't matter too much though. If you got roots poking through the drainage holes then get em re-potted

Then water in with rhizotonic as it helps against transplant shock.

This time around I went from

Jiffy Pellet (Germ) > Small Plastic Pot (1l ish I think) > 16l Fabric Pot

I did get an initial transplant shock, I think, which was just slightly slow growth, but it could have been my big pot and the roots finding their way.

No detrimental effects. The only issues I've had were due to the weather (I grow in a shed).

I make sure I can see roots at the bottom of the pot coming through but not madly overgrown as I have found they can stick to the pot and you could damage them during transplant. Wait till the soil is dry then transplant.

Mate I was trying to get my hands on something like this been bit of a ball buster with the shops n shit then forgetting haha but this is definitely on my “to get” list!!

Never noticed much detriment not using it tbh so should be good to compare its effects.

I would say the roots are more important to take clues from instead of how far the top growth is. I usually go from a 4"x4" container into a 3 gallon but am trying the 4"x4" container to a one gallon and then a three gallon this round.

Stepping up is more traditional horticulture where letting a plant get root bound slightly can be beneficial in slowing the growth (because nurseries don't want forests) but in Cannabis I try and not let them get very spiraled before I transplant into the larger, final container. If you do get a fairly root bound plant before you transplant, I recommend breaking up the rootball slightly, gently before putting it into the new soil.

I did have pictures to upload here and the patches thread :/ phone went haywire but and on a new one :(
Roots weren’t too spiralled to be fair, and I did notice it did grow a bit quicker than the one I put in it’s final pot.
Think I’m going to make it common practice in my groom now
Would it Be a good shout to use the stuff that breaks down dead roots if You need to break the rootbll up a bit if root bound?

Think I caught it just right amigo I wet my coco this time, but I’ll do it dry next

Awwww mate I’m in a loft and the temps are bursting my man dangles!!! Don’t even know how you cope in a shed!! Must be pure stress lol

I can’t remember my pot sizes but the route (root lol) I potted up seems the same as yours except I use plastic pots

I usually go from those cloth pucks to a solo than sometimes to a bigger pot one or two higher in stages ust depends on how big the plant is seeing roots is a good sign that you can transplant but depending on if you can actually see them you might not be able to so go buy how big the plant is judge is key your plant will tell you
