Pics would be helpful but in all honesty sounds like it’s either the light fitting or the switch at fault .. could buy a 240v detector wznd to bell it out for a couple of quid to see if powers actually at the point
I saw this message after I had posted.

At this time, photos won't help as I've not taken off the casing.
It looks a lot like this one...

Thanks, mate, but I'm too timorous to do it myself. Me and electric are not the best of friends. The wife is trying to find out if my mate has any experience. He may even have to tools you've mentioned.

just a switch wire or if the light is controlled from 2 or more places you could also have a 3 core in there
Switch it on downstairs and have to go upstairs to switch it off ;o) 3 pole switches are so much fun if you wanna mess with your mates ;o)

Do you think it's at the switch end of things, or at the light bulb end?
To be honest mate, the light bulb end is most likely, is it a pendent type fitting? i.e. Bulb holder hanging via a wire:-

Yea like minty said check it all but If you weren’t hanging off the light when it blew it’s more probable to be the switch as that’s the point when the bulb and trip happened , then no light comes on after the fact, saying to me that no power it making its way from switch to light .. to test this theory just turn power off and swap the wires from light to fan and fan to the light switch .4 screws 4 wires ... Na get somone dude lights are the only thing in a house that’s not straight forward as they sound

Thanks, mate. That's nice of you to offer.
When we moved in (over a decade ago) the landlady at the time said she'd had all of the electrics done, but when we had an electrician in a few years back, he said we have old wiring in some parts of the house - old as in not using the present colours.

We had one like that as a kid, but I used to have it half way, so anyone trying to use the light at the other end, the bulb wouldn't turn on. The other thing I used to do, is to turn it partially on and listen to it cackle.
