Hi Guys,

I didn't write too much beforehand because there was a lot to write, and I felt like shit. I still do.

We have separate bedrooms (probably why I've lasted so long with her) and in my room I have a SKY+HD box, an XBox360, my PC, and a TV.

The TV has 3 HDMI ports, so all I have to do is plug a HDMI cable into the SKY box and into the TV, then do the same thing with the XBox. No faffing around etc. Up and running, no problem.

Now... the wife has an older TV (hers only has one HDMI cable and SCART connections. The HDMI isn't being used)

I have a CAT5 cable running from my room to her Sky box so she can use some of the SKY options.

Her set up is...
A DVD player (SCART) a TV and the SKY box.

I am going to get her a larger TV as hers is only 24" but none of them come with SCART any more. I have seen a TV that I think she'll like (and I can afford) and comes with 3 HDMI slots and 2 USB slots.

If I just get her the TV, then she won't be able to use the DVD player, so what I am thinking of doing is to give her my XBOX (as I will be getting a newer one) and she can use that to play DVDs and bypasses the need to get a SCART to HDMI converter.

I will then be able to use a HDMI cable from the SKY box to the new TV.
I will also be able to use a HDMI cable from the XBOX to the new TV.

Here's the problem...
I only have one CAT5 cable and that's already in use (The one from my router to her SKY box) but the new TV needs an Ethernet connection if she wants to use it as a smart TV.

Will I need a CAT5 splitter?
Will the TV work okay without one? (I know it won't become smart without one)

I don't want to set it all up for her, just to find out I need something and could take a while to get. Or fork out for something, just to find out I didn't need it.

Mr Minty probleys knows more then me but I guess you need a ethernet switch in your room plug your tv and her tv ethernet cables into the switch and also the one from the router sort that out

And guess buy cheap DVD player with HDMI for best HD quality to watch on her new tv

The XBox 360 can play DVDs and I will be able to connect that to her new TV with HDMI. She rarely watches DVDs but I don't want to take that joy away from her.

My main concern is the Ethernet side of things. With mine, I just plugged it all in and away it worked. But hers will be a smart TV, and I don't know if it will need to be tuned in (using the Ethernet) or it will run just fine - but without the smart bits.

I can't run any other CATs connections due to all the ports being used. The only thing I can think of is a CAT5 splitter that will be at her end of things.

Na bro plug and play with new tvs just think you need a switch rather then a splitter switchs are like hubs but split the traffic evenly

Hey @The Aspie Toker mate, ignoring the DVD side and the XBox etc and simply talking about the Network cable (CAT5) you don't need that at all for her TV unless you want to be watching NetFlix etc or downloading apps. But to be fair there is no reason why you shouldn't just split the cable using a HUB/Switch to connect the TV to the existing CAT5 cable you have.

Most new cable modems will come with a built in router with multiple ports etc (so going back to your ISP for an upgrade would be my first suggestion) but if you simple want to 'split the cable' or need to extend the number of available ports (which I recently did) then look at something like this 5-Port Desktop Gigabit Ethernet Switch/Hub, Ethernet Splitter, Plug & Play, no configuration required, Steel Case, Lifetime Warranty and to be honest mate if your not fussed about the Gigabit speed you can probably get a cheaper one.

just bear in mind you can't just split that CAT cable, it needs routing etc to work correctly.

It will run fine as a dumb terminal mate as long as you have the correct cable to plug into the dumbness ;o) E.g. No smart T.V.'s will have a coaxial socket on them (I don't think - they might but WHY?) ;o)
