Fan Controllers

Post by wutang »

Hey guys

Do you guys own any decent fan controllers, not the dimmer type ones for about a tenner, but the ones that don't make the fan hum? I've seen a few ebay/Amazon but was wondering what you all use?

I'm trying to keep my humidity high during veg and have a oil heater inside. The extraction is a 4" rvk rhino pro in a 80x80x160cm tent with a 250w dual spec. Im hoping reducing the airflow will keep the tent warmer a bit longer rather than it being extracted rapidly, and using more energy as it tries to maintain the temps.

Cheers

I got a fantronix variac speed controller, it can be turned right down and no hum it was about Β£60, the Β£10 ones made my fan hum like a bastard, now that the temp and humidity is dropping it’s coming in handy so I can turn the fan right down and can keep the heat in the tent better rather than sucking it all out.

Hey @wutang i recently purchased a turbine fan and it was loud! But I was suggested this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261822147889 by a mate that has one, works wonders for me, negative pressure in both tents, and I can Turn it down at night so the Mrs can sleep πŸ˜‚ hope it helps πŸ‘ŠπŸ½πŸ’š
Thanks Buddy, I have one of those and I don't find it reliable as previously I've set it at a low speed and with negative pressure, I've come back a few hours later and the fan how slower even more reducing the negative pressure.

I'm looking at something like this with no hum, its the variac one;

I will probabaly get use out of it when drying too, at least I know the speed is fixed rather than worrying about adjusting the dimmer type so precisely, can be frustrating.

I agree. I'm in the same boat..the weather has done me over this time and not having a big enough tent. If I can hold off another couple of weeks for when my tent arrives I might not need one. This tent is a 80x80x160 and it has a 1.5kw oil heater. A 4" rvk and rhino pro really suck the tent in. In my new setup Ive got a 5" rvk and rhino pro for a 1.2x1.2x2.2m tent - I doubt I'll need a controller on that, as the calculations are already close enough when the fan is running on full power. Thoughts? I wish I would have gone for a larger fan now as I now appreciate the heating/weather issue a bit more. Thanks

Way to expensive for my liking (Eli shaped hole in the wall running from that price)
I thought the same, hence in my new setup of 1.2x1.2 x2.2m I only got a 5" rvk which the calcs say is perfect for that size tent..but with heating and humidity issues I probably should have got a bigger fan ans filter with controller. Oh I don't know...so much money spent..and then theres always more money to be spent lol

Always money to be spent  but yeah I've got a 5" ram fan running 2 tents, but I'm inside so heat hasn't been a problem for me, I'm more worried for winter as I have a cold house and no heater in my tents πŸ˜‚it's a fun game but when you get there and it clicks you'll be sorted πŸ‘πŸ½
Ahhh, mines in the garage..the standard thermostat on the oil rad seems to be working fine, I have it set to half way. Lights on never goes about 28c and lights off never goes below 18c..seems to manage it well give or take a couple of degrees in fluctuation of temps.

What size tents do you have?

I've got a 60x60x140 running into a 80x80x180 nicked the idea from point5 1 fan 2 tents cheaper πŸ’ͺ🏽
That is a cool idea, if a 5" works for you for both tents I should be okay with it for my 1.2x1.2 cheers

I run a 5 inch RVK with an SMS controller. The only humming is at speeds so low you wouldn't use them.
If you're UK Β£18.50 on eBay Grimsby Hydroponics for a used one.
At the moment the fan is running a 1.2m grow tent and 60cm drying tent.
Sorry couldn't put a link up as I'm clueless how to

@wutang id say it’s a question of how much extraction you need with regards humidity and temp, I’m running led lights so temps not a problem for me on the hot side but it’s starting to become a problem on the cool side hence the heater and turning my extractor down, I watched a video and this chap in a grow shop had done co2 tests and to keep the co2 levels up the amount of extraction needed is very low indeed, so my controlling factor is humidity hence why I want a small dehumidifier so I can run with minimal extraction and keep my heat in, not quite sealed but close.
