Re: Burping during curing

I done a little experiment the last few grows and sealed some pre-cure in vacuum sealed foil bags and after about 2 months they like rock hard with gas. You could play basketball with one  but.... I actually prefer the smoke over the jared stuff. Seems to hold it's freshness for longer.

Re: Burping during curing

While I am only just attempting my first dry/cure, so certainly not an expert but from my understanding and what I would suggest, is to burp the jar at least daily for the first couple of weeks to get some air exchange regardless of the humidity equation. I think letting in some fresh moist air will be more beneficial than keeping in stale less humid air.

On a humidity control side, do any of you guys use these humidity control packets:-
Boveda for Herbal Storage | 62% RH 2-Way Humidity Control | Size 8 Protects Up to 1 Ounce (30 Grams) Flower | Prevent Terpene Loss Over Drying and Molding | 10-Count Resealable Bag

I originally thought they only lowered the humidity but apparently they do a pretty good job of maintaining humidity levels. I would say in reality it is way too early for me to even be using them yet but I wanted to try them out and I am quite impressed. Certainly something I would leave in once you get past the burping stage.

They do multiple versions but the 62% is specifically for Canabis Curing from what I can gather ;o)

@GMO Looks like he is using the Humidity control things as well:-

Not a boveda fan think in short time it robs a good cigar of flavor and even quicker of weed. Personal opinion do as you will.

I heard this too but boveda are adamant that it doesn't:

I've actually done a trial where 10/18 jars are in 'storage' in the attic with boveda packs and 8 jars are just jarred up. I'm burping both but am interested to see if the packs affect any smell/ taste.

Just a heads up too... If you store jars cold, let them come up to temp if burping in a warmer room.

Take an Ice cold beer out the fridge and see how much moisture forms on the bottle when put in a warmer room.

Same for your beans in the fridge, always let your bean tin come up to temp before opening or we're all doomed!
Great analogy!

Re: Burping during curing

My kinda forming view is that burping is a control of enzymes breaking stuff down

We look for 60% for enzymes to be able to work, but pathogens like molds etc cant breed quickly

The enzymatic process seems to require oxygen and produce co2 as well as somehow transmuting and transporting compounds we dont want out.

So in my head we are exchanging stale air once the amount of break down for that air volume is reached. But parallel to this it seems that we are constantly battling to keep temps below 64f or 17.8c at which point some of the first flavours start to evaporate.... this is half combated by having a sealed environment leading to a higher vapor pressure of the compounds we are trying to hold and allows them to react with the less volatile compounds allowing them to be captured and stored

This is just a opinion I'm currently forming, lots of holes and areas to finish thinking through.

Food for thought
