Reuse your old material with Hugelkultur
Looking into different ways of growing gave me an idea last year on how to get rid of the majority of my waste after a cannabis harvest. Most cannabis farmers soon build up piles of material that is sadly thrown out. I helped close the loop on many of those waste streams by building a poor version of the ancient practice of Hugelkultur.
So here is what I did. I saved up all my sticks and stems, built a raised bed frame out of wood, and dumped all my "woody" material into the frame.
Next, I took all my used soil and covered up the sticks and it gave me a nice raised bed to be able to plant in.
The first year well with some squash and tomatoes and this year it is a leafy greens bed and it's doing great! The "woody" parts of the plant require more advanced microbes to break them down, usually fungus. This fungus will continue to break down the nutrition in the soil to help make it plant available. So easy, and So useful. I will try to get a video up of the bed this year if I can figure out how to upload them, lol.

This type of upcycling is really awesome, I've seen a couple of sustainable farming practices that included hugleculture, super amazing no till stuff . My eye is currently on a dual root zone home hacks for my cannabis recycling used water jugs as a octopot hack.grown in soil most of my experience, just been in coco for the last couple of years autoflowers are new to me as well but I love watching them grow and following the guys like you Mr.Spartan around the social arena to learn and become a more plastic grower no pun intended .

I chop it up small and put it in the compst bin and all the used soil goes on a flower/ herb bed.
Like a weirdo i collect the knuckles from the split of the stem (where the plant was topped) and dry them out and put them on a shelf in the groom.

Re: Reuse your old material with Hugelkultur
That is awesome to hear! Many people tend to fall into a certain way of doing things then they never progress past that point. The only way to really continue to grow (pun intended) as a cultivator is to TRY NEW THINGS. The older generations are a gold mine of organic gardening tips/tricks that I love hearing about. Dual root zone aquaponics is something my friend Steve over at Potent Ponics youtube is crushing with. Maybe someday I may screw around with that......G3W2HIN wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 7:44 amThis type of upcycling is really awesome, I've seen a couple of sustainable farming practices that included hugleculture, super amazing no till stuff . Re: Reuse your old material with Hugelkultur
I would encourage you to reach out to him through direct message on Instagram @potentponics or check out his youtube channel (you may even see a Spartan Grown interview over there!) of the same name (potent ponics) and message him there even, he usually is happy to help people with questions on how to make custom setups work. #growersloveG3W2HIN wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 1:46 am

Re: Reuse your old material with Hugelkultur
Need to add more variety in terms of thickness and density of materials to provide a longer breakdown event. Think tree branches and even logs, used to much success by many indigenous peoples.
Anyone that has time for drama is not gardening enough.
