The element sounds about right. I was almost finished cooking at the time when it went, so I didn't notice that it had stopped working.
This normally trips my breakers when my oven goes! and nothing cooks!

Thanks, mate. I'm going to get someone to fix it. I am not going to try and dismantle parts of an oven. I always end up with spare bits when I dismantle things.

Think of a blend of Mr Magoo and Frank Spencer. That's me.
It's just the element mate, and they are made to be replaceable/consumable and you can replace that mate. Just post a picture or the model number and we can advise you on what to buy as a direct replacement element and explain how to replace it. (it will be about 4 screws max, and 2x push on terminals) - easy as wiring up and LED.

JUST MAKE SURE TO ISOLATE ALL MAINS SUPPLY TO THE OVEN.

If not sure just switch off the main consumer unit to the whole house for 10 mins.

Post a pic of your oven at least before you proceed?
Even if I knew the part, I would still have to order it, and it could be a week before it arrives. Even then, I won't do it myself and will still need a qualified electrician to do it. There is a company that's local and are reasonably priced.

Don't forget, my eyesight is shit, I have clubbing of the fingers, COPD and other health problems. I've stopped fiddling with the PC because of my fingers and eyesight - and that's a machine that I know. No way am I going to fiddle with electric. I've had too many close calls.
Never give advice. Wise men don't need advice. Fools won't take it.

Fair enough mate. At least show us what you are dealing with (i.e. the grill) so you know if the quote you get is reasonable etc. The elements are usually about £8-£16 plus fitting. If we know what model we are all talking about at the very least we can give you a ball park figure you should be looking at to get it replaced.

Just trying to help.

Aspie and electrics dont mix       :barmy:
You're fucking right there, mate. Cut through a cable with scissors and tripped the house. Followed a week later when I cut through the cable on the hedge trimmers. I didn't notice that the cable was around the blades.

British Gas condemned the last one we had, all because it was missing one of the black disks that go on top of the hobs. It was only one that was missing, and on a hob that we never use, but the prick still condemned it.

The landlady had to buy a new one and wasn't happy about it.
If this is true then your landlord is a Fairy (C-u-n-t - feck you Fairy filter - this is serious).

If they condemned it then you should question what you are getting for your rent mate.

Sorry Aspie, but Gas, Water, and Electrics all have different risks.
  • Water = You get Wet
  • Electrics = You get Shocked
  • Gas = You get DEAD
Don't take chances especially if you are renting mate. Make them pay for the buildings upkeep and equipment. You are effectively doing maintenance by living there. Ask them for for basic supplies.

A new oven should be seen as an investment from the person owning the house.
It was at that point we found out that she didn't want us living there. She was given - yes, given - two houses. One for her, and the one we are living in. We moved in long before she became our new landlady. (The previous landlady is a related of her)

When BG condemned the oven, she had to buy a new one and wasn't happy about it. We don't want to create waves because she hasn't raised the rent in over 10 years. The oven is only a few years old, so I don't want her to know about it. I'd rather pay and get it fixed.

I know, mate, but my camera has already pissed me off today. Spent fucking ages trying to get the images off the phone to the PC.

I don't care if it costs me £100. As long as it gets fixed and the landlady don't know. It''ll be worth it. BG are due around August for its annual test.

The oven is in use atm. I'm drying banana skins. Also, it's too late to take photos etc. I'm already knackered.

Even if I had the element right now, I still wouldn't attempt to do it myself. I hate using the damn thing as it's too low and I have to squat or be on my knees when I use it - then have difficulty getting up again.

The grill is inside the oven (below the gas hobs)

I still want them to look at the oven igniter anyway. Peace of mind and all that.
IIRC there isn't a maker's name on the oven. We never bought it, she did. It's the most basic model ever. It's not one we would have chosen.

I'll get them to look at the oven igniter too, as I think something may have spilt onto it because although it clicks, it doesn't ignite the gas.
This will be alignment if they all spark/click - ie when you press the clicker it will actually try and light all your burners regardless of the gas supply to them. Leave all your GAS OFF and press the clicker and look for sparks at each burner. It might just need the the burner (negative part) cleaning so the spark goes in the right direction.

Whoa, hang on, you said you had a Gas Oven with an Electric Grill? This now sounds like a Gas Hob with an Electric Oven?

Can you clarify Aspie, as this totally changes things.

It's classed as a gas oven. The 4 hobs on top are gas. The oven is gas.
The grill inside the oven is electric.
Electricity is used for...
the grill
the oven light.
the grill light.
the gas igniter.

The hobs still ignite. The oven light still comes on as does the light to tell you the grill is on. Everything else is gas.
