Germinating with a broken Philips Hue Bulb?

Post by Minty »

Hi Guys,

Well I dropped one of my Philips Hue LED Spot bulbs and broke the glass surrounding but the actual diodes seems intact and it powers up fine:-

It's a full colour bulb and the colour temperature can still be changed etc. so I was wondering if it could be used to germinate seeds with? Looking at the diodes on the board, the orange ones look the same as most you see and there are a couple of red ones so I need to find a datasheet to check but It looks OK to me for the short period it will be required for. Anyone had any experience using HUE bulbs at all?

Thanks Both,

It actually has a really nice spread on it without the original glass diffuser. The angle seems actually better for germinating:-

Any advice on what colour temperature I should run it at for germinating or what brightness (it is still remote dimmable using the Hue Bridge/Alexa/Phone etc.). I know the lower blue temps are good for veg and my Invisible Sun R Strips are 3,500K but the PCB markings show the following options:-
  • 2700K
  • 3000K
  • 3500K
  • 4000K
The Hue bulb apparently can do 2000K so my question is really should I go as low as 2000K or stick to the 2700K (technically confirmed working by Invisible Sun)?

Mostly thought it was quite interesting seeing the inside of a Hue bulb.
