Soil or Coco

Post by Ghost_In_A_Jar »

So I've been growing for about 12 months now.... You could say I've reached pro status. It wouldn't be true, but it would be a nice thing to say.

I've always grown in a soil pre mix with guano. I do question if it's worth changing to coco and if anyone has switched between a soil and coco grow....what their experiences have been.

:morning: :pass:

That's probably the biggest debate on this forum 😂 I've always grown in soil generally batmix so I can't help, if like to say (and wind people up) proud grow in soil beginner's in coco 😂😂 but that's not true at all I've seen some awesome growz in coco by "Pros" and some poor growz in soil by "pros" each to thier own really what ever works for you and gives you the best results you want /need

I thought that would be the case lol
Just for the record though.... Autos seem to work really well for me in soil.
When I tried photoperiod plants under the same conditions, they got loads of mould.

Hello @Gupz,

If you have done a year in soil then I'd say give coco a year. Both have pros and cons. I grew in soil for years, not full organic though. I had a number of issues along the way and was advised coco would suit my growing style better. I finally changed over and didn't look back.

To sum up soil - Less labour intensive but less control. Will work well if you can read plants well and get on top of issue before they take hold.

To sum up coco - more work and more kit needed that soil. Easier and faster to correct issues and will normally yield better.

Soil is a easier approach and more laid back style of growing. Coco is good for people who want full control and like to tinker along the way.

I'm dojng a full article atm on growing in coco. But fir now:

PH meter
EC meter essentials do this and quite cheap.
The coco itself, I recommend something like canna coco professional. Not the coco brick stuff.
You will need nutrients. I highly recommend canna coco nutrients. And you only need the badics from that range.

Go have a look at Maximum's grow diary in the mentoring grow section. Perfect example of a basic nutrient regime with big big plants.

Hey there so soil or coco is a preference thing but I will say that I grow with coco and it to me is the easiest way to fix deficiencies when they pop up qnd also I’ve been able to get much closer to pinpointing what each of the strains I grow prefer. Good luck! Experiment and find what you enjoy✌️

Hiya there i myself prefer a full soiless mix..coco husk... vermiculite..perlite mix,I find this a nice balance and easy to maintain,I also like compost with a full on neutral PH..... best thing to do is try a mix and work with it. Good luck

great googly moogly!

Thanks all. I think I’ll give it a go.

Just out of interest....any reason to avoid the block of coco?

@Keeno I'm interested in this question too, I've used Coco bricks for years meant for reptile bedding. I'm organic though so the microbes feed my plants
