I do not have a preference to one over the ogther and grow both. Much like an adjustable spanner vs a whip spanner both do different jobs, I see it much the same for auto's vs photo.
I use Photo strains as a longer term grow and then the autos can fit in around them and in my Veg tent to top up my grows. The good thing with auto's being you can grow them under any light/dark period.
In fact I have just started soaking my last blue dream auto to go next to my photo plant in my .8M tent:

This will go into my 55L pot and I will squeeze my auto in whichever pot fits in the floor space.
So for me, I have no preference, only in certain situations, so I can't say one, or the other.

Re: Beginner grower
Personally I used to grow nothing but autos but then I got the Blue Dream Photo and found the bud structure a lot denser than with any of the autos I'd ever done. It was also a lot frostier in the same environment than any auto I'd done, so now I'm a feminized photo kinda guy. I dont have space for regs really or I'd probably go that way and make some seeds but I'm learning on how to keep a bonsai mum healthy so I may do one day. Cant do that with Autos either
