AHH yes that's a beast. I'm returning the 5.0 bulbs in favour of two more 10.0 bulbs. I only want a small amount of UVB though. That thing would give you a tan pretty quickly

Rite o I got a UV bulb / strip.....rbh6i lit it up and looked at it it made my feel sick as fuk for an hr it so ....I won't look at it again ever anyway I'll be hanging it in the chamber in a few weeks time Image

great googly moogly!
Lol nice one mate. Yea watch looking at it. Our eyes don't see those colours well so to us it looks bright but no where near as bright as it actually is. Blue will damage your eyes.

I did you with the idea of just a UVA strip but I really wanted those UVB wavelengths too. I'll be watching to see what sort of results you get Cap!

Salutations,

Although i do appreciate the YouTube entries of Bruce Bugbee i'm increasingly less present on-line, so there's a lot that won't fill the hobby time anymore, unfortunately. In days before home-growing got further criminalized in my canuck province the Ultra-Violet subject would have made me read & watch all of it, with special curiosity evoked by IPM concepts meant to deter infestation by nuisible insects as "The Borg". The reasoning was that such little critters would possibly avoid UVA in fear of the more harmful UVB... In any case i did acquire 1 reptile bulb but never went as far as to reach firm conclusions, except i'd want to "chop UVB light periods" to implement "Pulse" mode exposure via timer, to prevent hurting vegetal life and yet simultaneously render my cultivation space even less inviting to parasites. But that was in another life.

Good day, have fun!! Image
Hi Egzoset,

Nice to see you in one of my threads again buddy! It's been a while. Bruce Bugbee is a great guy. I've always been a true believer that information should be free and easily available. Not that I'm a fan of socialism but free information empowers people to build upon what we have already achieved. I really appreciate people like him sharing his knowledge and research.

I really feel adding UVA/B is the key to unlocking the full potential of LED horticultural lighting. UVA improves plant physiology and UVB increases secondary metabolites within cannabis. UVA will increase leaf thickness and increase brix level that will in turn make it hard for critters. UVB will also effect their lifecycle in many ways and act as a deterent.

Another thing that really interests me is calcium signalling and the direct connection with UVA/B light. Ever since I switched over to LED something is missing. The plants grow nice and I get some killer yields but the plants never look as healthy as the plants grown under traditional HID lighting. Leaves seem thinner than the leaves of plants grown under other lighting as well as other characteristics seem to change when moving from florescent lighting over to LED.

I'm a stoner and didn't finish school so my vocabulary is lagging to do these subjects justice so I've provided some links for anyone that wants to read more. Much like humans, plants use UV light to produce vitamin D amongst other processes.

So that's me, I'll probably break of into another thread to demonstrate the complete setup but I'll be running these alongside my LED. My goals are not to increase secondary metabolites by blasting them for a few hours a day but to deliver a consistent low dose of UVA/B to see how this affects the plants.

Oh, that's a nice thing to read! This might actually help me to remember who's who as i must admit being less than "socially" oriented.

This makes sense to me as well, but i got to wonder what's taking so long to develop perfect LED panels considering the whole spectrum (spreading from, say, 300 to 800 Å) can be divided into 2 dozen 20 nm bands at most. Consequently it would only require as many simultaneous sessions to identify slots not essential respective to a plant's vegetal phase. For example if it hurts to remove blue then it's got to be included on the LED array i figure...

Are those LED spectrums programmable as a function of time on the long-term? Additionally i'm curious about how high the cotyledons will get, since i had begun to notice that my seedlings seemed to prosper best under strong CFLs rated around 4200 °K. At the time i reasoned that a massive stalk would give them a better start in life, as far as the leaves don't "bleach" that is.

To be honest i got absolutely no hint of any impression like that. Perhaps it's my own style which feels misplaced but that's how i manage to still find some enjoyment/motivation from the remaining of my former hobby, vaporism being what's left in the "makers" domain.

I envy you!

Thank you for those 2 URL suggestions. Good day, have fun!! Image

P.S.: In this season i may happen to require calcium and vitamin-D myself!...

We have a load if ISH UVA 8 systems on the way so can get a fair bit of testing done. In near future.
