Tourists WILL be banned from Amsterdam's cannabis-selling coffee shops in 'necessary intervention' to drive down serious crime and violence, city's mayor insists

Amsterdam's cannabis coffee shops are set to ban tourists in a 'necessary intervention' to get a grip on the local soft drugs market.

Mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema has said she wants to press on with plans to temporarily shut up shop on the city's cannabis cafe's to tourists as there is a 'worrying interdependence' between the soft and hard drug trade.

'Money from the lucrative cannabis trade easily finds its way into hard drugs,' she said.

'Many of the major problems in the city are fueled by the cannabis market. From nuisance cause by drug tourism to serious crime and violence.

Also known as kamikaze mayor kills Amsterdam's hotel industry. I used to live in almere buiten @ 20 miles north of Amsterdam, never met a single person who visited or moved out there from another country that did so for the architecture. Crazy moves at a time when economies are struggling. Groningen will be busier though.

They have been saying it for a number of years. Personally when I'm over that way I don't buy weed in Amsterdam. I dont get the association between weed and violence though, the pissed up tourists yes, but the stoners? Its usually very drunk brits and yanks that get in trouble from my experience.

I'll stick to the other lovely places rather than Amsterdam when I visit.
