Meter readers/Data collectors
Just had one catch me right off guard guys, normally I’d never hesitate and just invite them in but literally I had just finished doing some jobs in my tent and the door knocked 5 mins later
House has a slight pong but managed to keep him at the doorstep with the door pulled too (just my head on snow)
Explained the meter was blocked and not accessible right now, asked him to come back later he said he finishes early today, asked him to come back tomorrow he said he’s off and then he told me he will come back again Saturday morning
Middle aged and seemed rather pushy and dismissive to me
What’s the deal with these guys here in the uk?
Tom

Re: Meter readers/Data collectors
I wouldn't worry mate, to him you are just another job in a hundred that week. All he needs to do is look at the meter and leave. They see some mad shit, a lot of it not "above board".
Since I've stopped smoking and only use oil, I really notice the smell of weed. The sort of pong you are talking about won't be half as bad as if you were just having a joint in your front room. Im sure hes been in a few houses this week with people who smoke and it smelt 10 x stronger than that wiff you mentioned above.
At least now you have a day and rough time for the next visit.

Probably made myself more paranoid as I had just been messing around in there
Just came across very pushy and forceful
I’ll make sure I’ve aired out the whole downstairs nice and early Saturday

Re: Meter readers/Data collectors
I had an unexpected inspection a couple of weeks ago. Bit of quick thinking (unusual for me lol) "yeah mate, go where you need to, but not the bedroom. Misses works nights & is in bed" while he was looking around the kitchen, quickly shot upstairs & made sure the door was well closed. Worked a treat, will be doing it again in future. Obviously this will only work if your bedroom doubles up as a garden haha

Re: Meter readers/Data collectors
Everybody has the right to refuse entry to their home.
The Electricity Act 1989 allows inspectors legally get in, but they'd have to get a warrant first. And I expect they'd write to you a load of times before that anyway.
They probably try it on a bit because they have targets for number of readings per day etc.

Re: Meter readers/Data collectors
Thanks guys very helpful, I have a very good fan and filter but I am at a stage now where it must be seeping out of the tent a little bit or something
When I first open the hallway door in the morning it hits me or if it has been unzipped for 15-20mins
Wasn’t like this last week lol

Re: Meter readers/Data collectors
Yep that’s the plan mate, but he’s damned if he thinks I’m spending my Saturday morning staying in all day waiting for him and there’s a chance he doesn’t even show up!

Re: Meter readers/Data collectors
Well….. he never came back Saturday and I had the place all ready for him and smelling amazing lol
Not living my life around these numpties coming or not
Just puzzled me when I politely said leave me a card mate, I will fill out when I’ve tidied up and very smugly he said (and smiled) we don’t give cards out anymore
I remember in lockdown people was allowed to write it down for them and leave in the front window, makes their job much easier
Which just led me to think it was more for an inspection than a collection of data lol
