You gotta work that soil deep. On my farm we don't use tillers as it compacts the soil after hard rains and causes disasters . We use chisel ploughs, broadforks and spades/forks only . It keeps the soil agregates in tact and provides a nice aerated soil deep below for deep rooting crops like carrots, beets etc
The best we found for carrots is raised rowbeds of 30" wide with 3-4 rows per It provides good drainage and aeration , they dry faster after mega rains too

Polly's Veg and Flower Garden
Venus fly traps … so i revived mine to a wicked healthy babe , fed it all summer on flies and spiders , brought him in the house for winter but lack of flies and crawlies I’m now wondering if he’s starving and if this is gonna affect him … any winter tips please
