Re: Silent 6” fan in the uk
hey vador a silencer is an in line can like a carbon filter but is hollow with acoustic mat that slows down the flow whilst silencing it used inline after the 6” fan
Vador wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 12:32 pmNice one cheers buddy, I’ve heard of variac’s before but never really knew what it was for, just had a little read online and it sounds like a good option, that’s a decent price as well, I can wire it up myself and even have a couple of temperature probes left over from a raspberry ok project that might work with it.2-Scoops wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 11:32 amIt just works same way as an ec fan i think basically by turning down current/energy/whatever where as the cheapo digi climate controllers work differently and just slow motor so you still got the same 240v current going in. I just set mine at 28c with a 2c tolerance each side and when temps drop or climb it kicks fan up or down and either drops or raises temps to 28c leave hang the dongle and away we go. It doesn`t come with temp dongle thing, plug or bit you plug extractor into but just the unit box, but ask guys at shop and im sure they will put them in box for a few extra quid or do as i did and just cannabilize an old shitty temp control and use those. I wired it all up myself with help from guys via email and they sent diagrams, daft proof stuff mate really if i can do it with 1 arm im sure you could mukka.
Theirs some here going cheap if you know how to wire them up but im sure you could sort easily enough and im pretty sure i still got how too diagrams they drew me in saved emails, then again im not sure if i have tbh but think i saved them. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/194997673646 ... SwuMliL9Rl
What do you mean by a silencer please?Daddypurps wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 11:51 amrvk with a silencer and acoustic ducting works for me with twin fan controls obviously
Well after all that messing around yesterday it’s made it nearly impossible to hear in the day so that’s a start, only trouble is when I was laid in bed last night i could hear it, needs more work. Getting there though

Re: Silent 6” fan in the uk
You shouldn`t really need a silencer if you have around 2 to 3meter of acoustic ducting coming off outlet of your fan, if doing that it should do you a similar job as the silencer and keep the noisy outlet air quiet, longer runs the better when it comes to using acoustic ducting this way tbh, but you need long runs on outlet when using acoustic ducting or it doesn`t work as it should do properly to keep outlet air quiet. Silencer is best used stuck directly on the outlet of extraction fan if you can`t have long runs of acoustic ducting.Daddypurps wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 1:22 pmhey vador a silencer is an in line can like a carbon filter but is hollow with acoustic mat that slows down the flow whilst silencing it used inline after the 6” fan
But with this one of Vadors its his motor that humming cus its turned down but still has full power running through it, its not the air that`s making a noise that he`s on about.

Got 5m of acoustic ducting either side of the fan.2-Scoops wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 1:59 pmYou shouldn`t really need a silencer if you have around 2 to 3meter of acoustic ducting coming off outlet of your fan, if doing that it should do you a similar job as the silencer and keep the noisy outlet air quiet, longer runs the better when it comes to using acoustic ducting this way tbh, but you need long runs on outlet when using acoustic ducting or it doesn`t work as it should do properly to keep outlet air quiet.Daddypurps wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 1:22 pmhey vador a silencer is an in line can like a carbon filter but is hollow with acoustic mat that slows down the flow whilst silencing it used inline after the 6” fan

Now I’ve been thinking and when this fan was set up at my mates house we would sit in the room smoking and let the fans suck the smoke out, on reflection I bet the bearings are gonna be gacky and horrible, might also account for some of the noise, last night the fan was spun up to 50% and I could hear it whirring, perhaps it is bearing noise I can hear.
The fans not old and has hardly had any use so should be running pretty quiet still, tempted to buy an identical 10” for a straight swap then service the old one and keep swapping them over and servicing every 6 months.
On the other hand perhaps just down to the size of the fan maybe that’s why it makes so much noise

Re: Silent 6” fan in the uk

Re: Silent 6” fan in the uk
An 8-inch running half power will be quieter than any 6-inch and move as much air.

Re: Silent 6” fan in the uk
Going for stealth though, it needs to be whisper quiet.
If it wasn’t for the future house guest I’d say it’s fine as it is but need to go that little further, bigger fan dulled down.
Exactly what I was going for, the 10” is set to max out at 50% on the fan controller, even at that speed I can hear it late at night now though. Nearly got it but just needs a little more work and fine tuning.
This is the 10” I’m using, so that dialled down to 50% is roughly equivalent to a 6” ram fan anyway. Only difference is the 6” will be running full speed to move the same amount of air I’m moving now.
Thing is I’m waiting on a shipment of led panels so everything should run much cooler now(I think) so a 6” might be a good option still.
Toying with the idea of just buying another 10” ram fan and swapping them over every 6 months, £100 delivered isn’t a bad price but I’m worried I’ll still hear it.
Going to get some bungies and try hanging it from the joists

Re: Silent 6” fan in the uk
Turns out all this could be cos I’m not getting enough air into the room to replace the air I’m trying to take out of the room.
In the old room I relied on draughty windows and gaps all around the door and had enough airflow.
In this room I’ve siliconed the around the window and then boarded the window up so no air is getting in there, the door has lots of gaps around it and I thought that would be enough, when you sit behind the door you can feel quite a breeze.
Last night I opened the door a crack and it quietened the fan down quite a lot, I’ve also changed the fan speeds on the controller and raised it up enough so it doesn’t hum at low speeds.
Need to make an air inlet into the room but not sure where to put it. Can’t put it in the door as need the door to look normal, can’t use the window as I don’t want the window misting up all the time, can’t put it into the loft cos it gets too hot and also there’s too much crap floating around in the air.
It’s time to get creative.

Re: Silent 6” fan in the uk
I used to work with a passive inlet 1.5x size my 6 inch filter but i remember Missy telling me around x2 is good, but i thought what with gaps which their always is 1.5x was enough @Vador
