Never give advice. Wise men don't need advice. Fools won't take it.

Re: WTF
I dunked them both back into the water, got some fresh water (from the tap) got some fresh paper towel and two new plastic bags. I then put a seed into each bag/paper towel. I couldn't see any mites on either of them. (I originally had both seeds - about an inch apart - in one paper towel. Only one seed had mites on it)
Although both cracked and planted, only one survived - and not doing at all well. I think the soil is too hot for it and is stunted in growth. The other never showed.

The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.

Re: WTF
How though?
The cats are house cats, the plants downstairs have never had spidermites, thrips or anything else like it.
The seeds were sealed, the bag was out of a box, the paper towels were new, and the water was out of the tap.
The only thing I can think of - if it's possible - is that there were eggs on one of the seeds. They only spent a few hours in water - long enough to hydrate them, but not long enough to drown them.

Re: WTF
I’m thinking at this point there’s no harm chucking a couple fresh beans in the drink and starting again Asp, off on the right foot from the get go

Re: WTF
I put both seeds into jiffy pellets. One sprouted, the other didn't, so I started another one off. It has sprouted.
The 2 x 11 litre pots - I took out most of the soil and replaced it with something less hot. I've kept some of the stronger stuff at the bottom.
The 6 litre pot has the hot stuff in it, but the plant is struggling atm.
