I would guess that the spidermite has come from a indoor plant this time of year they would be dormant outside. Dunking the seed in water would have killed it if it came on the seed what is very doubtful. If you do have any house plants Aspie i would be checking them thoroughly.

We've never had spidermites. There are no bugs on any of the wife's plants.
The water, towels etc. have not been anywhere near plants. There were two seeds in the paper towel, but only one seed had them on.

I may cut off the mesh before planting them into soil.
I never bother. I've read some bollocks about the mesh holding roots back but they seem to grow through it no problem for me. If anything, it's more risky to try and cut the mesh away without any root damage. The mesh doesn't break down but it doesn't cause any issues.
