first up a few simple tools being a drill with a 5-6mm drillbit a small flat head screwdriver a standard philips screwdriver a pair of pliers a fine particle mask and gloves (the carbon dyes skin black, ask me how i know!) pic of tools used for the job
now first step is to drill out the 3-4 (some use 3 some 4) rivets that hold on the end the ducting fixes to these are normally soft metal and easy to drill but be care ful not to drill right into the filter body, pic showing said rivet first in situ second drilled out,
once you have drilled out all the rivets use a small flathead screwdriver and gently lever off the top try not to twist or bend too much as this makes reassembly a pain!
once removed you will see a sponge/rubbery gasket/seal which simply lifts out and under this you will find a mesh bag which you need to carefully unfold what i do is stretch the outer part over the main body and tuck the inner into the middle and out of the way.
then you need to simply tip the old carbon out and be aware when tipped out it will send out a whole mass of fine dust so this is what the mask is for, once emptied simply refill to the same amount this is best done with a large ladel and a funnel by just ladling into the funnel and tapping it as you move it around the mesh bag and regular tamping down and gentle tapping and shaking to ensure nice regular fill and no gaps but do not over squash it down,
next fold back up the mesh bags top and add back the sponge/rubber gasket as seen here
now simply replace the top do not worry about trying to line it up with the original rivet holes any position as long as its on back to where it was at the start and simply use 3/4 self tapping screws and screw them in where the rivets used to be meaning next refill is even easier as no drilling needed. do not forget to refit the prefilter if it has one. and enjoy another year of smell free groom at much less cost and what you save buy more seeds!
