Basically the tool your using is in us/cm (1400) and the ones lets say that we are used too measure in ms/cm (1.4ec) both are EC, same but different really. That's what i get from reading about and chart below anyhow.

One more question re EC, do you subtract your background ec of the water from the target EC, ie if background ec is 0.2, and you want 0.8, do you shoot for 1.0 total?

Yes shoot for 1.0ec in total that's right tis what i do nowadays anyhow . Tis summink to with calcium carbonate in your background tap water EC being useless and unusable by roots. @duke knows more on this he put me right with it all time back now.
