It’s just a form bud a piece of paper with some preset writing on it, a few signatures and it is a legal document, no need for solicitors especially if it’s a simple will. The Aspie Toker wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 10:18 pmIMO wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 7:42 pmMy mum bought a simple will form you can get them online I think post office might sell them, she signed it and had 2x witnesses, it went through probate no problems, if your married and dont leave a will then the wife gets it anyway I think as she will be your next of kin. Just keep it safe and maybe have a couple of copies of it, if it’s a simple will no solicitor is needed. We are not married. I did say earlier in the thread that we are not married but I call her my wife. If we were, then I wouldn't have to worry about a will as she'd get everything as you've already said.
I'll look into the Post Office thing. I trust them more than solicitors.

When you go in hospital or doctors etc to fill in forms it hey usually ask your next of kin also the common law wife etc wouldn`t that be proof enough. The Aspie Toker wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 10:18 pmWe are not married. Its summink I've pondered myself though as i have a decent pension that would go to my next of kin and it needs sharing round 4 not that it wouldn't be but it just makes shit more writ in stone hey.
Whats that mean and do i need to do it with one of those will forms ive seen in P.O. Cheers.

@The Aspie Toker im not sure if you would need to go through the probate process it’s basically a section in the local court, I had to do it to close and finalise my mums bank account as the bank needed a document from the probate office, your missus the beneficiary of the will would probably need to do this for pensions etc, they basically check the will to check your eligible for the inheritance in it.

It's also worth checking with your pension providers (if private). They often ask for a next of kin/named beneficiary in the result of your death.
Whilst not a full will, it may offer some comfort that these aspects of your legacy are already covered.

Technically, you are correct, but there can be unforeseen errors/problems if worded wrong. I just want my partner to have whatever she wants from my worldly goods.
The last time I remember being asked they mentioned an ex of mine. I've been married and divorced twice since she was listed as next of kin. They also still have me down as DNR if an operation went wrong and I was left as a vegetable.2-Scoops wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 10:53 amWhen you go in hospital or doctors etc to fill in forms it hey usually ask your next of kin also the common law wife etc wouldn`t that be proof enough.

I have 2 shitty pensions. One from British Rail and one from a bank.
I've asked the wife if she would go back to her ex once I'm gone. I want someone to look after her. I'd like her to do so. I can go without that being on my conscience.

Re: Anyone in the UK that's made their own will?
At some point the wife will be going for power of attorney. They are greedy bastards because there's one for wealth and one for health. Both £82 IIRC. We need to get them for both of our mothers. I'll do mine once they've been done, but I don't know when that will be.IMO wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 12:53 pm@The Aspie Toker im not sure if you would need to go through the probate process it’s basically a section in the local court, I had to do it to close and finalise my mums bank account as the bank needed a document from the probate office, your missus the beneficiary of the will would probably need to do this for pensions etc, they basically check the will to check your eligible for the inheritance in it.
All this will stuff is new to me. What to do, who to send it to etc. Fucking headache esp when there are so many sharks around.

I cannot remember TBH. I'll have to ask the wife to look into it. She does all the paperwork stuff and IIRC she has the pensions somewhere. (I wrote to BR and asked for it ages back. Not sure about the bank one.)
Thank you everyone for the help and guidance.
