Hey GR420,
With many of you moving to LED, you may want to have a rough idea about how far to hang them or how much to dim etc.
Unfortunately, without an expensive meter, it's hard to figure this out. HID lighting was pretty consistent as in PAR output due to the technology being simple. There was some improvements over the years like "dual spectrum" and other small tweaks but the output was pretty consistent as well as most growers would hit their BTU limit before hitting maximum DLI. Due to the large differences in diode output as well as the ever increasing efficiency, LED is a bit of a minefield and you can quite easily upset your plants as well as waste energy by whacking up those units to 100%
It's a large subject with many factors and you can't really pin it down. I suggest you do your own research or shout and maybe myself or our resident LED experts Invisible Sun can shed some light on the subject (no pun intended).
Anyway, enough with the waffle. I've been using a LUX meter on my smart phone and this online calculator to get a rough estimate on what my plants are receiving. It's been handy when dialing in my LEDs so it might help others. check out the link below.
