Higher humidity to ensure shedding of seed coat?

Post by seymore_budz »

So I watched a video today where a gardener was germinating seeds in 95% humidity to ensure all seedlings shed their coat after germinating.

I've always had a problem with seeds not loosing their jacket and I germinate without a humidity dome. Do you think there's any truth behind this? These guys are germinating millions of seeds a month and it was suggested they discovered this after years of testing and figuring out how to germinate seeds at scale. I may try an experiment next time I pop beans.

Same here dude but this is more about as they lift up out the media. My jackets never fall off and I have to pull it off carefully before damage occurs. Apparently it keeps things supple and they fall off much easier?

I normally put mine in water then put them in the medium and put half a coke bottle or a clear party cup over them till the shell comes off, seems to work

You mean the outer hard seed casing or the soft thin membrane GG?

The membrane, just drip a drop of water off your finger on it a few times, pause ... and it'll just lift off. They need moisture when cracking them.
Both if I'm honest bud. I'll deffo try that method to Marcus! I just had to pick one off and it was pretty tough.

Awesome, moisture/water seems to be the key.

yes, just bury them a bit deeper.

They should come out of the medium with no shell on them, unless they are really old landrace genetics possibly, but 99% of seeds should emerge without a shell.

I've heard people use high humidity or spray it slightly when the head is left on.

Does this also depend on genetic and strain?

I mean the video was partly about how they manged to scale out to 80 million plants and they were explaining how some species of plants needed the treatment. I'm just taking my experience and wondering if this would apply to cannabis. It's something I've never thought about but it makes sense. You can always call upon the community for data and experience when researching these little techniques
